AusCycling Queensland State Manager Sean Muir said riders aged two to 70 were arriving for an entire week of training events in the lead-up to the competition.

“We had more than 250 riders participating in the Pre-State Championships on Sunday (September 18) at the Cairns BMX Track, where riders will be fine-tuning their track strategies with coaching sessions all week,” he said.

“Australian kids grow up learning two key skills – swimming and riding a bike – and most kids learn on a BMX bike.

“This is an excellent opportunity for Cairns families to watch the excitement of BMX racing in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

“This major event was made possible through the support of Cairns Regional Council and Tourism Tropical North Queensland.”

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said the city was delighted to host the 2022 AusCycling BMX State Championships.

“Queensland’s premier BMX event builds on Tropical North Queensland’s growing reputation as a signature sports destination,” he said.

“With 1,000 riders along with family, friends and officials converging on the city for the three-day event, this is another opportunity to peddle what our region offers the broader cycling community.

“I do not doubt that spectators will be treated to some fantastic racing as riders push themselves to the limit on the track’s array of jumps, bumps and banks.

“Who knows, perhaps some of the local youngsters watching will be inspired to jump on their own bikes and, in years to come, emulate the feats of these riders.

“That’s what events like these can do, inspire people to improve themselves and reach higher goals.”
