Douglas Heat Are Aiming High!
THE Douglas Shire certainly boasts an abundance of sporting activities. In this very column we’ve already covered Hockey, Boxing, Rugby League and Soccer.

Being a Pom I, of course, prefer to call the latter Football. Basketball is another popular activity, with Douglas Heat Basketball competitions set to commence in February.
Last year, Douglas Heat Basketball Club ran a successful introductory program called Aussie Hoops, with under 13, under 15 and senior men’s competitions.
This program was also open to boys and girls aged 4 to 11 years with the kids being taught Basketball fundamentals in a relaxed and fun atmosphere on Wednesday afternoons after School.
The participation last year was fantastic, resulting in the huge development of individual and team skills. Always wishing to improve, the team are aiming towards a more structured competition, this year, which will be more rewarding for the kids involved.
Douglas Heat hosted a very successful Representative Tournament against Atherton in the middle part of last year, losing only 1 game.
Just last month, the team competed in a regional Tournament in Cairns. The under 12’s got their first real taste of Rep Basketball, gaining a wealth of experience against the better equipped Cairns boys.
The under 14 boys team made a clean sweep, winning all 3 games by good margins. This particular age group has some very talented young lads and this certainly bodes well for the future of the senior competitions in the years to come.
The under 16 girls’ team was a bit down in numbers, but Cairns kindly helped out and lent their team a couple of team members. From this, they actually managed to win one game.
Douglas Heat are now looking forward to further developing the Regional Tournament program this year. This will definitely give all kids in the Region something to aim for. In fact, a Skills Clinic is also being considered, during the school holidays later this year.
