The two and a half day, family-friendly event will run from Wednesday, December 18 to Friday, December 20.

A Cassowary Coast Regional Council spokeswoman said participants could enjoy a bit of competition while contributing to the health of the region’s local ecosystem.

“We extend a huge thanks to our incredible sponsors who have donated over $6000 worth of prizes to make this an unforgettable event for the families in our community,” she said.

The tournament is free to enter and all ages are welcome. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

The event was postponed in August due to project works affecting water levels in the wetlands.

Councillor Jeff Baines said this year was the 10-year birthday of the fishing competition and “this year will be bigger and better than before”.

“On behalf of my fellow councillors and council employees, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all our sponsors, old and new, for their ongoing generous support,” he said.
