The famous Kuranda Scenic Railway is a must-do rail adventure for all ages. Locals are well-loved by the railway and offered 20% off Heritage Class seats – and with the locals fare extended to more residents across North Queensland until 11 December 2020, it’s a perfect time to hop aboard.

There’s also a Gold Class upgrade available in special carriages with extra comfy seating, a dedicated attendant and tasty locally-sourced refreshments. Kuranda Scenic Railway meanders its way through the ancient World Heritage-listed rainforest of the Barron Gorge National Park to Kuranda, with spectacular views along the way.

The train stops briefly at Barron Falls for an up-close view and photo op. The historic carriages are hauled by dedicated 1720 class locomotives adorned in artwork depicting the Djabugay dreamtime story Buda-dji.

The audio commentary available on board tells the railway’s incredible story. The Heritage-listed line originally opened in 1891 and is an engineering feat of tremendous significance. Up to 1500 men at a time used hand picks, shovels and dynamite to carve through mountainous and unforgiving landscape to construct the 33 kilometres of track.

Kuranda Scenic Railway operates daily and can be joined at Cairns Railway Station or Freshwater Railway Station for morning departures and from Kuranda Railway Station for afternoon departures. Social distancing and increased hygiene measures are in place on board and at stations.

While in Kuranda, choose to visit the tea room at Kuranda Railway Station or one of the many popular attractions like the Kuranda Rainforest Markets, Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld Kuranda to mention a few. Or, relax at a local café or hike the nature trails. A grand day out awaits you.
