Esplanade Lagoon to close for maintenance
THE CAIRNS Esplanade Lagoon will undergo its biennial maintenance program from 18 July to 8 August to ensure the city’s most iconic feature remains in top condition.
The maintenance program will include repairs and upgrades to the pool’s surface, lighting, pump systems and amenities.
“The pool and its surrounds need major maintenance every two years to keep that area looking and operating at its best,” Mayor Bob Manning said.
“Without this maintenance, our lagoon wouldn’t be the star attraction that it is.
“While there’s never a good time to close the lagoon, the maintenance program has been scheduled in the cooler months when usage is at its lowest and to avoid school holidays when we see southern tourists flocking to Cairns for the warmth.”
The Lagoon will need to be drained for some of the maintenance to be completed, therefore a full closure is required.
The lagoon will be drained on 18-19 July via a stormwater outlet.
The maintenance program includes:
• Detailed survey of render faults and required rectification
• Repairs to subsidence-related concrete damage
• Sand replenishment
• Pipe work/pump repairs and valve overhauls
• Clean out of balance and backwash tanks
• Cleaning and polishing of fish structures
• General signage renewal around lagoon
The amenities building will also be closed for the same period as the lagoon. Alternative public toilets are in Fogarty Park.
