Mayor Amy Eden said risks of storm bursts associated with the tropical low off the coast significantly increased the chance of flash flooding.

“We've spoken to the two big supermarket chains today to check on supplies,” she said.

“They've told us they are working on getting through to Cairns any way they can, most likely via the inland route.

“I also reached out to Rusty's Markets to see if they can open earlier than their usual Friday, so we'll see what might be possible there.”

Cr Eden said flash flooding happened suddenly and often with little warning.

“Parents and carers are being urged to educate children about the dangers of playing in drains,” she said.

“Avoid overflowing stormwater drains which pose significant risks of injury or drowning.

“Residents, especially children, playing in or near flood waters can be quickly swept away, be injured by debris or become trapped.

“To protect your family, house and businesses, be prepared and ready to act.

“Know your risk and if sand bagging is part of your household plan, get and fill sandbags in case you need to block doors and stop water getting inside.

“You can get sandbags from the Smithfield and Gordonvale Transfer Stations. Additionally, SES are also stocked with bags and sand.

As always, check the Cairns Disaster Dashboard and the BOM for the latest updates .

Residents are also reminded that a minor flood warning is in place for the Mulgrave River and there is flood warning for the Russell River.

In the meantime, the flood threat which hit Cardwell has been reduced.

The Cassowary Coast Local Disaster Management Group said the flood risk in the Cardwell area had now been reduced.

“However, a small risk of localised intense rainfall with thunderstorm activity remains possible, and residents should stay informed via radio and the warnings issued by the Bureau of Meteorology: www.bom.gov.au/qld/warnings,” it said.

Barron MP Bree James said all stores in Cairns were currently open.

“Please only buy what you need so everyone can get essentials,” she said.

“We’re in contact with Coles, Woolworths, and Metcash to address stock and supply issues.

“There’s about six weeks of supply in warehouses.

“Both Coles and Woolworths are finding ways to get stock to shelves, and we’re doing everything we can to ensure supermarkets are able to receive the supply they need from their warehouses at any time instead of only within the standard curfew.

“We won't be able to buy all of our favourite items but please don't overbuy.

“Buy local, support your local butcher, baker, grocer-they often buy local so many are still able to supply plenty of stock.”
