Free green waste disposal starts this weekend

Clean up the yard and take advantage of Council’s first free green waste disposal of the year from this weekend.
Mayor Bob Manning said the free green waste disposal period, from Saturday 18 February to Sunday 26 February, provided a timely opportunity to clean up overgrown yards.
“At this time of the year our yards can quickly get overgrown and unsightly,” Cr Manning said.
“Trimming trees and overhanging branches is an important part of preparing for weather events like cyclones.
“Getting rid of excessive vegetation can also reduce mosquitoes breeding spots in the yard.”
Cr Manning reminded residents it was important that garden waste was disposed of correctly.
“Dumping green waste in drains or areas where it can be washed into drains can cause blockages that can lead to flooding during heavy rain,” he said.
Residents taking advantage of this month’s free green waste disposal period are encouraged to make a voluntary gold coin donation, which will support Far North Queensland Legacy Inc.
Founded in 1923, Legacy provides social, emotional, developmental, and financial support to the families of Australia’s veterans.
This year also marks 90 years since the establishment of Legacy in the Far North, with all funds raised in 2023 to go towards establishing a Legacy House in FNQ.
Residential green waste can be dropped off free of charge from 18-26 February at the Portsmith, Smithfield, Gordonvale, and Babinda Transfer Stations, seven days a week, from 8.30am to 5.15pm.
