"Gazza's Goss: Port Douglas distillery wins best navy gin in the world"
ONE of Far North Queensland’s newest distilleries, Devils Thumb, reached global heights last week, winning World’s Best Navy Gin in the World Gin Awards 2022.

The top honour for Devils Thumb comes after the news, exactly one month ago, that the Port Douglas distillery had won silver and bronze medals for their Signature and Rainforest gins.
They also took home the Australian title of Best Navy Strength Gin, which put them in the running for the ultimate global award.
Devils Thumb Head Distiller and cofounder Mark Norman said the driving and defining force of the Navy Strength Gin lies in its inherently native Australian quality and distinctive, Far North Queensland sense of place.
“The Navy Strength gin draws on the sensory aromas and citrus flavours of traditional botanicals,” Mr Normal said.
“Angelica, navel oranges and local bush lemons, and ingredients from our rainforest and reef landscape, notably native red finger limes and a touch of Great Barrier Reef seawater.
“Add in pure water sourced from the oldest rainforest in the world, and this gin has a special character – it is a harmony of many elements that make it truly unique.”
Mr Norman also explained the production process that contributes to the flavours of the navy strength.
“The distillation process includes a combination of an extended steep of key botanicals, various vapour infusions along with careful dilution and resting which produces a multi-layered spirit with individual flavours shining through,” he said.
Devils Thumb co-founder Craig Parsell said the team were thrilled to win this accolade from the World Gin Awards.
“The awards provide a platform to focus the spotlight on Far North Queensland, its natural abundance, and what is a burgeoning handcrafted and artisan spirits industry,” Mr Parsell said.
In securing the world’s highest accolade, the 58.8 per cent alcohol-based (ABV) Devils Thumb Navy Strength Gin competed against an impressive roll call of global winners.
