Tilapia Tournament Smashes Catch Target

THE TILAPIA did not stand a chance this week in the Warrina Lakes waterways, with hundreds of keen fishing fanatics gathering for the 2022 Tilapia Tournament.

The six day long event has been a school holiday favourite over the years with participants of all ages trying their hand at hooking a winner and helping remove the pest from the lake.

With 350 participants registered prior to day one of the Tournament, expectations were high for a successful week of fishing.

Councillor and President of the Innisfail Game Fishing Club Nick Pervan, said the Club was very excited to sponsor and support the event again in 2022 as it is great for the community and also for the environment.

“The main motivation behind reducing the pest species is to reduce the impact the Tilapia have on the region’s own native species.

“Tilapia invade and dominate water habitats and although a hard species to eradicate, the tournament does help reduce numbers significantly.

“The event has been enjoyed by all with families and community members utilising the parklands, public BBQs and enjoying the fun outdoor day out.

The school holiday fun is not over yet with community members encouraged to attend the final day of the Tournament on Saturday 24 September where keen participants can fish from 9:00am. A lucky draw will be drawn at random on Saturday with the winner receiving a kayak kindly donated by BCF and Ozfish. Tournament winners will also be announced at 11:00am with a variety of generous prizes on offer.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council’s Family Day Care Scheme has also kindly sponsored the annual JUNK Art competition with participants presenting their works of art from 9:00am Saturday 24 September.

The Tilapia Tournament is proudly presented by Council in partnership with the generous 2022 sponsors including Ozfish, BCF, Game Fishing Club Innisfail, Berkley, Soils First NQ, Coastal Marine & Outdoors, Manitto’s Auto Centre, Harvey Norman and Shakespeare.
