Women write their journey
Women in Media (WIM) Far North Queensland hosted a writer’s breakfast on Friday November 13, at Flynn, a Crystalbrook hotel.
The purpose of the event was to provide networking opportunities for women working in the media, as well as to fundraise for their sponsorship of a young woman, Suntali Tamang, who is studying journalism in Nepal.
“I’m so happy and I want to say thank you so much for supporting me,” Ms Tamang wrote to the group who attended the breakfast.
Women in Media is a nationwide not-for-profit initiative for women working in all facets of the media – from journalism and media advising to public relations and corporate affairs. The Far North Queensland branch was launched in 2014.
“Women In Media equips, inspires and empowers women to increase equality for women working in the media and represented in media,” said WIM FNQ founding branch committee member Pip Miller.
A trio of highly inspiring local female writers spoke at the event: Kerstin Pilz, Laurie Trott and Angela Murphy.
Ms Pilz spoke of how writing had helped her survive and heal through traumatic life experiences. She now teaches the healing power of writing to others through her business ‘Write Your Journey,’ with a number of online courses and writer's retreats coming up soon.
Ms Trott, a Mission Beach based journalist, poet and playwright spoke of her disappointment when COVID-19 postponed the majority of performances of her play ‘To Kill A Cassowary’ in March this year, and asked everyone to support it when it reopens in 2021. Click here for tickets.
Ms Murphy spoke about the process of producing her play Prospect Terrace during a difficult year. The play opened at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre on November 20.
